What Singaporeans were searching for in 2017

Pokemon Go continued to hold it’s interest among Singaporeans in 2017 as well as it came up in Google’s top trending searches for the year. Singaporeans turned to local realtime Pokemon tracker Sgpokemap for help, catapulting the site to #1 of Singapore’s trending searches in 2017.

Sports was the other high interest search category for the country. High on the buzz of Singapore’s first Olympic Gold Medal win last year, Singaporeans continued to cheer for their local sporting heroes at the SEA Games 2017 (#7, Trending Searches) in Kuala Lumpur.

The top trending searches also highlighted Singaporeans’ fondness for gadgets and all things tech. The introduction of the iPhone 8 (#1, Gadgets; #2, Trending Searches) and the announcement of the iPhone X (#2, Gadgets; #3, Trending Searches) helped the two devices climb the top of the charts while the IT Show (#3, Events) and PC Show (#10, Events) emerged among the most searched events in Singapore.

Google’s data showed that there is no denying that Singaporeans are passionate about their phones as Singapore’s smartphone penetration rate is at 91 per cent. In a year of new phone releases including the Google Pixel 2 XL (#9, Gadgets), it is no wonder that smartphones dominated the list of top searched gadgets in 2017 – taking up nine out of ten spots with the exception of Nintendo Switch (#5, Gadgets).

In the ecommerce category, e-shopping service provider ezbuy (#10, Trending Searches) made the list of top searches once again this year together with online marketplace, Lazada Singapore (#9, Trending Searches). This reflects present-day consumer patterns towards online shopping as Singaporeans continue to turn to search for the best deals online.

According to Google-Temasek e-Conomy report released recently, Southeast Asians spend 140 minutes shopping online every month––almost twice as much time as Americans. Google search queries for top e-commerce brands have also grown more than twofold between 2015 and 2017 in Southeast Asia.

Apart from shopping sites, Singaporeans also embraced new brands and disrupters in the market like bike-sharing service Obike (#6, Brands) and Singapore’s first fully digital telco, Circles Life (#5, Brands), with both brands making it to the the list of trending brands in Singapore this year.
