For utilising social media platforms as a vital means to connect with fans or voicing thoughts and opinions unabashed, Sonu Nigam, renowned celebrity singer, was awarded Socialathon Person of the Year 2015 at an event ceremony in Delhi on August 7 ,2015.
Instituted in the second year of the Socialathon Awards, Person of the Year, is an editorial recognition that looks to honour names outside the media, marketing and advertising fraternity that impact the social media fabric of the country and in turn, the business of communication itself.
Mr Nigam’s social universe comprises over 20 million unique users (nearly 18 million Facebook fans and 2.66 million Twitter followers) “This is more than what some large brands claim today. Mr Nigam is amongst those names that have leveraged social platforms at a time, when these are fast becoming a primary way of communication for many. His views with instances such as #IStandWithSonuNigam or his social media push for Rdio or inviting users to create a song for his YouTube exclusive ‘Trini Ladki’ are only some examples of the popularity that he enjoys with his fans on social media platforms,” explained Mr Annurag Batra, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, BW Businessworld India, parent company of Digital Market Asia.
Mr Nigam has used digital media not only to project his brand but also to facilitate causes. His social graph has seen consistent growth in interactions and engagement.
While receiving the Socialathon Person of the Year 2015, Mr Nigam said, “I have received various awards in my career, some extremely important for me but this is a very special recognition and I thank Digital Market Asia for thinking of me for this award.”
